CBDC — Central Bank Digital Currencies

The name Central Bank Digital Currency is quite self-explanatory. It’s a Digital Currency that is managed by a Central Bank a many Central Banks are looking at it, China’s PBOC being one of the main leaders in the field.

A CBDC can, in theory, achieve real-time settlement for banks and entities that are transacting using it and it also allows Central Banks to have higher control over the currency.

The concept of digital currency is as old as applications like Digicash and platforms like Paypal, Monex and Chipknip.

The evolution of DLT technologies however have motivated Central Banks to re-visit the digital currency topic (which is also in line with the increasing control of governments in certain countries) and some countries have announced their implementation in 2021.
