It's awesome to hear that your family inherently embraced this approach even in the 60s! Here in Asia, most people are still adopting the old approach, where men are often only expected to care about making money to provide for the family, though the new generation seems to be changing their approach.

I am still not sure about my position on "gender equality" though - as I still think women and men are indeed 'made' in different ways and are good at different things - just like for thousands of years, men went to hunt and provided for the family, while women stayed home to nurture kids and take care of the family. The role of men is to protect and provide, while the role of women is to nurture and support.

However, in this modern world where roles are mixing up, it would be great for men to share the work traditionally done by women, while women share the work traditionally done by men.
