I would love to backtest the ideal stop loss (or no stop loss) on a large sample of assets.

It happened to me many times having investments dropping over 50% in price and turning into a nice profit a year later.

Personally, I think I would prefer to look at the asset and think "Is this still a good asset? Does it have a future and potential to recover?" and then decide to manually stop the losses or just leave it and wait for it to recover one day :)
