There's the survivorship bias for sure. We only hear about the the contrarians that succeeded.

And perhaps there are also non-contrarians who succeeded in different aspects of life.

Personally, I've been on a path of refusing a lot of normal things such as TV, Netflix, most social media, alcohol, and just being comfortable.

Thanks for suggesting Nassim Taleb! Which of his books do you think I should read first? I've heard of Antifragile.
