I think that sounds like a good plan! Especially with MidJourney V6 just around the corner, just start with MJ first :-)

It's almost "hard" for MidJourney to create any "bad-looking" images, it may not follow your prompts 100%, but the MidJourney images are 99% decent-looking and tasteful. Learning about some extra tricks and MidJourney features (especially the inpainting feature) can also help you achieve results closer to what you want.
